WHEN learning of the death of Alex Salmond at what is now a relatively early age of 69, I was shocked and saddened.

I was never an SNP member and only become totally convinced about Scottish independence 25 years ago. When I watched Alex Salmond’s speech after the referendum defeat I was holding back tears. The last time I had felt that emotion for a man was when my father died in 1964.

I wrote to Alex Salmond and told him of my reaction. That emotion was caused by my appreciation of what he had done for his party and the leadership he gave in the Scottish Parliament, but most of all for his leadership of the Yes movement during the referendum.

While I had differences with what he did latterly, it must be recognised that he made a massive contribution within this historical period to the advancement of Scotland’s right to self-determination.

My condolences to all his family and friends.
