I WOULD like to applaud SNP MP Marion Fellows for introducing a Ten Minute Rule motion in the House of Commons, calling for a “social energy tariff” to assist those struggling to stay warm, including the disabled and those who are dependent on their energy for health reasons.

But as Marion Fellows informed the House, this motion would not have been necessary if the Conservative government had honoured their own commitment to open a consultation on introducing a “social energy tariff” in the summer of 2023. To date there has been no action.

Is it not appalling that in energy-rich Scotland fuel poverty is a major issue, and has many consequences resulting in health issues for thousands? Energy policy is reserved to Westminster, however thanks to the SNP Holyrood government we have a Fuel Insecurity Fund here in Scotland, established to mitigate Westminster energy policies.
