IT is reported that some housekeeping and cleaning up has taken place in Downing Street and in the House of Commons. Housekeeping in the form of reshuffles of the inner circles of government, perhaps even rewarding those who have not submitted a letter to the 1922 committee asking for the PM’s resignation – who knows, but more importantly, who cares?

As the country is gripped with a massive cost-of-living crisis, the new appointees – along with those in their usual seats on the government benches – scarcely attended the House of Commons on Tuesday afternoon! The debate was an opposition day debate on the “cost of living crisis”, yet the government were nowhere to be seen, conspicuous by the absence. Too busy with their reshuffle to attend and contribute to a debate which is affecting millions of households.

So the question is, what difference will the housekeeping exercise in Downing Street make? From attendance records in the Commons on Tuesday, the evidence is clear.
