MICHAEL Fry has once again presented an analysis of Scottish society derived from stratifications based on income (Independence will be won by gaining support from people from all classes, Sep 7). It appears that he does not value the work of the people who clear his rubbish weekly as much as the GP he visits occasionally. I wonder how he estimates which makes the greater contribution to his ongoing state of health.

How does Mr Fry manage to conclude that “this society ... is already a pretty equal sort of place” when the top fifth of the population earn nearly 50% of the country’s income and possess 60% of the country’s wealth, while the bottom fifth have only 4% of the income and only 1% of the wealth?

I hope that Scotland following independence will address the inequalities that Mr Fry praises, and properly value all of our citizens. We cannot build a better future if we value the majority of our population as little as he appears to.
