LYNDSEY Ward of Communities B4 Power Companies is the latest correspondent to check the UK energy market during a period of clear calm weather (Letters, Dec 8). She knows that gas power stations will be brought online for a number of days and National Grid Electricity System Operator will be requesting imports of electricity from Europe. We experience these conditions a few times a year.

Lyndsey Ward forgets to mention that during such periods the cost of electricity in the UK market goes stratospheric. Irrespective of where the gas comes from, its cost matches the global market and it is the most expensive form of electricity we have. This is partly why our energy bills are so high.

Yes, the wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine but low-cost renewable energy is subsidising expensive gas-fired power. Renewables are part of the solution – not the problem.
