ST JOHNSTONE captain Jason Kerr last night described the McDiarmid Park club’s performance in their Betfred Cup semi-final win over Hibernian as the best he has ever witnessed.
The defender opened the scoring at Hampden with a first-half header at a David Wotherspoon corner and Shaun Rooney and Craig Conway added goals in the second-half.
Kerr was taken aback at how Callum Davidson’s side, who will now play either Livingston or St Mirren in the final next month, performed during the 90 minutes.
“We rode our luck in the first half because Hibs were the better team by far and they created a lot of chances,” he said.
“But we scored at right time and went on to turn in an outstanding performance to get ourselves through.
“We got a set piece and I knew it was a chance to relieve some of the pressure on us if I could score. I got a jump on Ryan Porteous and made a good contact on the ball. I have been due a goal. The last one was against Hibs the last time.
“Shaun’s was another cracker as well right enough. Big Rooney has been outstanding this season, one of our best players so I am really happy for him.
“I felt we have a tall squad that could be effective at set pieces. It wasn't just that, though, we were a threat in open play, too.
“If I am honest I think it is the best display I have ever seen from a St Johnstone side. It is obviously a great feeling because we are in a final.”
Kerr knows that St Johnstone will have to reproduce their semi-final performance in the final next month to win the League Cup for the first time.
"We have fancied ourselves all season,” he said. “But St Mirren and Livingston are good sides and have put in good performances to get to this stage so we are not going to take them lightly - this is just the semi-final.
“Hopefully, we can get a good performance in the final as well and win the cup because that's all you want to do as a football player.”
