THE race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States is reaching its finale.
Tension is high going into Tuesday (November 5), when Americans across all 50 states – from California and Texas to Pennsylvania – will go to the polls.
Here at The National, we will be covering all the happenings and drama – including on-the-day coverage on Tuesday as well as the evening and early hours of Wednesday, as the results of this crucial election start to trickle in.
We already have some great exclusive stories and explainers online already, including:
- What would a second Donald Trump presidency mean for Scotland?
- Scottish Government 'should investigate Donald Trump even if US president'
- How Americans living in Scotland feel about the impending US election
- Over 75 per cent of US presidents have Scottish roots – why?
For the election day and night itself, our resident American reporter, Joe Sullivan, will be leading our live blog throughout the night.
Meanwhile, political reporter James Walker – who covered the last US election in 2020 for the US publication Washington Monthly — will keep you up-to-date with all the most important and Scotland-relevant developments.
We will also be making sure you are well versed in what to expect and how the US election system works – expect articles and explainers including on what the electoral college is and which (and what are) swing states to keep a particular eye on.
Whatever the result, this US election will have global implications and will certainly be one not to miss!
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
