When did Anas Sarwar become the Scottish Labour leader?
After Leonard was forced out by Keir Starmer ahead of the 2021 Holyrood elections, Sarwar again stood to lead the group. He was successful, beating Monica Lennon in a two-horse race.
When was Anas Sarwar first elected as a politician?
Anas Sarwar was first elected as an MP at Westminster in the 2010 General Election. He had been selected to run in Glasgow Central in the place of his retiring father, millionaire businessman Mohammad Sarwar.
In the 2015 General Election, Sarwar lost the seat to the SNP’s Alison Thewliss.

In the 2021 Holyrood elections, Sarwar was again voted in to represent the Glasgow region as a list MSP. He had also stood in Glasgow Southside against Nicola Sturgeon, but lost by a significant margin of around 2:1.
