Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar pictured with predecessor Richard LeonardAnas Sarwar bid to lead the Scottish Labour group in the 2017 contest to replace Kezia Dugdale. However, he lost out to the left-wing candidate Richard Leonard.

After Leonard was forced out by Keir Starmer ahead of the 2021 Holyrood elections, Sarwar again stood to lead the group. He was successful, beating Monica Lennon in a two-horse race.
