THE search for the next Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger for the new HBO original series has begun – with an open casting call put out to children across the country.
HBO announced in 2023 it would be creating a new "decade-long" Harry Potter television series which would be a “faithful adaptation” of the world famous books written by JK Rowling, who will serve as executive producer.
It will feature a brand new cast while staying “authentic to the original books”, to bring the wizarding adventures to new audiences.
HBO begins search for new Harry Potter stars
It has been over a year since the announcement of the new Harry Potter TV series was made.
But HBO has now begun the search for three children, from anywhere in the UK or Ireland, to play the roles of the series' main characters – Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
A post on the Harry Potter Facebook page revealed HBO has announced an "open casting call" for children who will be aged nine to 11 in April 2025.
The casting call reads: "Open casting call for children to play the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the upcoming HBO Original series adaptation of 'Harry Potter'.
"We are currently only able to consider children who are aged 9-11 in April 2025, and a resident of the UK or Ireland."
Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger were previously played by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson respectively in the films.
How to apply for the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Wesley and Hermione Granger
The only way to apply for the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in the new HBO TV series is by visiting the Cast It website.
Applicants must submit two videos:
- A video reading a short poem or story of your choosing (30 seconds maximum and nothing from Harry Potter).
- A video about yourself including your date of birth, height, where you live as well as any family member, friend or pet that you are particularly close to (one minute maximum).
You can find more details, and "self-taping instructions" on the Cast It website.
Applications must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian, HBO says.
The deadline for applications is October 31.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
