A YELLOW weather warning for thunderstorms will come into place for much of Scotland on Sunday afternoon.

Following a period of good weather, the Met Office has said “heavy showers and thunderstorms” are likely and that this could lead to disruption.

The warning mainly covers the west of Scotland, and some cities including Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh are not covered.

It will be in place from 2pm on Sunday, May 12 until 3am on Monday, May 13.

According to the Met Office, this is what to expect from a yellow warning for thunderstorms:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

The warning comes after clear skies on Friday night meant the Northern Lights were visible for many across Scotland.
