A body was found in Helensburgh in the search for a missing man who was last seen on Tuesday.

Joshua Gayton, who worked as a submariner at Faslane Naval Base, was reported missing after he was last seen on April 16 at a petrol station in the town.

Police Scotland say the body of a man was found in the water off Helensburgh at around 6.20pm on Sunday, April 21.

Officers say that while formal identification has yet to take place, Mr Gayton's family has been informed.

Police say they do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances and that a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 6.20pm on Sunday April 21, police received a report the body of a man had been found in water off Helensburgh.

"A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course, however, the death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
