TWO ferrets were found running loose by the side of a busy road after being dumped in a lay-by in Fife, the Scottish SPCA has said.
The Scottish SPCA were notified after two members of the public spotted the animals while driving along the B9157 Invertiel Road between Dalgety Bay and Kirkcaldy on April 14.
The ferrets were found running loose in rubbish before being caught by animal welfare officers.
The Scottish SPCA were called and the ferrets were found by the road.
Animal rescue officer Lea Bowskill commented: “On Sunday afternoon we received two calls from members of the public who were driving past a lay-by and spotted ferrets running loose amongst the rubbish in a lay-by near Kirkcaldy.
“One male ferret has was very friendly and appeared in good health. The other male ferret was very thin with obvious abscesses on his body and tail.
The SPCA said the ferrets were left in a 'dangerous situation'.
“They were both taken to a vet to be checked over but sadly the poorly one had to be put to sleep due to his condition and was in obvious pain and distress.
“The remaining ferret is now receiving care and attention from our staff at one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres.

“These ferrets were left in a dangerous situation and we would urge anyone unable to care for their pets to contact our confidential animal helpline for support and advice.
“If anyone recognises this ferret or has any information surrounding his circumstances, they should call our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
