UPDATE: "Riverside Drive is currently open but our teams are monitoring the weather situation and may need to close the road again at 1pm high tide if rain continues," says Aberdeen City Council.

A MAJOR road in Aberdeen will remain closed overnight after the River Dee burst its banks.

The river, photographed on Sunday following Storm Kathleen as flowing fast and high, has burst amid flood warnings for the area.

Riverside Drive – which runs by the river – was then closed in both directions from South College Street to the King George VI Bridge.

Aberdeen City Council has confirmed the road will remain closed for the remainder of Monday night to assess the area and monitor the next high tide.

A spokesperson said: “Due to the forecast and flood warning, Riverside Drive has been temporarily closed as a precaution.

“The road experienced flooding and will be re-opened if and when any flooding subsides.”

Aberdeen is set to see more heavy rain amid yellow weather warnings over mainland Scotland over Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday, Aberdeen City Council had asked those in the area to move vehicles on the road.

A statement on social media stated: "Sepa has issued a warning for flooding for the River Dee on Riverside Drive.

"A series of high tides continue, combined with storm surge, mean flooding of areas in and around Riverside Drive is possible today at about lunchtime – please move vehicles in that area."
