A PLAY based on a famed Scottish novel has unveiled its cast ahead of its spring tour.

The new adaptation of Sunset Song will tour Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh from April 18 to June 18 and was produced by Dundee Rep Theatre in co-production with the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh.

Sunset Song (1932) by Lewis Grassic Gibbon was voted Scotland’s favourite book in 2016, according to a BBC Scotland poll.

In 2020, a new edition of the novel was released featuring an introduction by then-first minister Nicola Sturgeon – who has described it as her favourite book of all time.

Dundee Rep and Royal Lyceum Theatre said: “Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s powerful coming-of-age tale continues to capture hearts and imaginations across the world.

“With a profound lyrical intensity, Sunset Song tells the story of human resilience in the face of great loss.

“Following the spirited Chris Guthrie as she faces a choice between a hard farming life and a world of learning, her journey to womanhood in the early 20th century sees her face crushing poverty, harrowing family trials, stirring love, and the ever-looming threat of the First World War.”

Danielle Jam (Mina in Dracula: The Reckoning) will play the lead role of Chris, “Scotland’s most iconic literary heroine”.

A Dundee Rep alumnus of their graduate acting scheme, Jam’s return to the Rep stage “marks a meaningful return” for the actor.
