AN acclaimed Netflix drama is set to boost tourist numbers in Edinburgh, according to industry experts.

The adaptation of David Nicholls’s romantic novel One Day, which is partly set and filmed in the capital, has garnered rave reviews since its release on February 8.

It follows the story of Dexter (played by Leo Woodall) and Emma (played by Ambika Mod) after they meet on their last day as students at the University of Edinburgh in 1988 and begin a tumultuous relationship spanning decades.

A publishing phenomenon at the time the novel was released in 2009, the 14-part TV series is set to recruit a new generation of fans of both the book and of the city where the characters first meet.

The book was previously made into a film in 2011 starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. However, unlike the latest adaptation, it failed to impress critics.

Jenni Steele, film and creative industries manager for VisitScotland, said seeing Edinburgh on screen often resulted in people deciding to visit.

She told The Times: “Our research shows that almost one in five visitors from our top international markets are inspired to travel to Scotland after watching movies and television shows filmed or set here.

“The book, film and now TV adaptation of One Day are helping to showcase Edinburgh to UK and international audiences.”

The episode set in Edinburgh takes in numerous landmarks, including the Old College quadrangle and the summit of Arthur’s Seat.

However, tourists are also likely to seek out lesser known areas showcased in the series such as Viewforth and Grosvenor Crescent.

“People spend their time on screens, watching stuff and then they are looking to recreate, or capture some of that in their leisure time,” said professor John Lennon of the Moffat Centre for Tourism and Business.

“There are enormous numbers of fanboys and fangirls who want to go to these places and take their photographs.”

It isn’t the first time Edinburgh’s beauty has been celebrated on screen.

In recent years movies such as Fast & Furious 9 and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga have all been filmed in the city.
