A UKRAINE-STYLE refugee scheme should be set up to welcome Palestinians to the UK, an MP has demanded.

The vast majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants have displaced since Israel began its bombardment against the region in October but neighbouring Egypt and Jordan have refused to take in refugees.

SNP MP Hannah Bardell (below) has tabled a written declaration in the Council of Europe calling for the creation of a refugee scheme modelled on that set up to support Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.

In March 2022, the UK Government launched its “Homes for Ukraine” scheme, which saw households paid to take in Ukrainian refugees.

It also opened a rare “safe and legal route” for asylum seekers to reach the UK, denied to those who attempt to cross the English Channel in small boats.

A number of prominent politicians, including Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, have hosted Ukrainian refugees.

Bardell’s declaration is currently open for signatures at the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe where 306 representatives from 46 countries meet to discuss global issues.

She told The National: “The situation in Gaza is devastating and it is imperative that the UK Government support, and advocate for, an immediate ceasefire and look to establish a refugee scheme for Palestinians.

“I hope that my written declaration is signed by as many representatives from different countries as possible, and sends a strong signal to the UK Government.

“Gaza is in crisis with over 25,000 people dead and nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population on the brink of starvation. 130 Israeli hostages are still unaccounted for. We need an immediate and permanent ceasefire.”

The UK Government was approached for comment.
