A BY-ELECTION will take place in Glasgow following the death of Labour councillor Hanzala Malik.

The election for Hillhead, ward 11, will take place on March 7.

The poll could be an indicator of voting intentions in the city for the forthcoming General Election.

At the last council election in 2022, the Scottish Greens won the most first preference votes with 2507.

The SNP came second with 1984 and Labour third with 1532 votes.

The Scottish Greens, SNP and Labour will all be looking to win the seat.

Completed nomination papers for candidates must be delivered to the Election Office, 40 John Street, Glasgow G1 1JL, no later than 4pm on Monday, February 5.

Malik, who also served as an MSP for Glasgow during a long career as an elected member, died last month aged 67.

He was first elected as a councillor for Hillhead in 1995 and served until 2012.

He was a Labour MSP for Glasgow at the Scottish Parliament between 2011 to 2016 and returned to the City Chambers as a councillor in 2017.
