A LORRY has succumbed to ongoing confusion apparently caused by a satnav error and driven down a set of stairs in central Edinburgh.

Thursday’s incident makes the lorry the third vehicle to be pictured stuck on the same steps at the foot of Calton Hill.

Two cars have previously seemed to be misled by a Google Maps bug which had reportedly been fixed.

The US firm’s maps service does now show steps at the entrance to Greenside Lane from Leith Walk and directs people to drive around it.

But it didn’t stop the lorry attempting to take the route down the steps.

The incident happened at around 11.30am on January 18, Edinburgh Live reported.

The route was previously driveable, but pavement now divides the road from the lane and steps have been installed.

The National:

When a white Vauxhall got stuck, one user wrote on Twitter/X: “I thought he was just mounting the pavement until I heard the huge crunch."

"The absolute determination not to fit bollards to protect people from drivers just keeps paying dividends in Edinburgh," a second added.

The second vehicle, a white Toyota taxi, reportedly became stuck in the same spot one week later.

A spokesperson for Google said the error had been “fixed” after it was flagged.
