A PETITION is calling for a Glasgow bridge to be named after Billy Connolly.
The footbridge on the River Clyde, which is due to be completed by 2023, will go between Pointhouse Quay in Partick and Water Row in Govan.
Works were expected to begin on-site last month after Glasgow City Council awarded the contract to build it to Farrans (Construction) Ltd.

The creator of the petition said the bridge should be named after Connolly as he grew up on Stewartville Street and went to St Peter's Primary north of the river before attending St Gerard's Secondary and becoming an apprentice at Alexander Stephens south of the river.
They said: "With the Big Yin suffering from Parkinson's Disease, such a tribute within his lifetime linking two areas of the city so indelibly connected with one of Glasgow's (and Scotland's) most beloved sons would be no more than the great figure deserves."
At the time of writing, the petition had 145 signatures. It can be found here.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
