BBC Scotland’s team in Tokyo for the Olympics have been told to self-isolate for 14 days after a positive Covid-19 case was identified on the flight to Japan.

Chris McLaughlin, a sports news correspondent for the broadcaster, said the team have produced numerous negative PCR tests but must continue to isolate in their hotel rooms.

It comes just three days before the Olympics officially kicks off.

“Hugely frustrated that BBC Scotland team here in Tokyo identified as close contacts to a Covid case on flight over. Rules say self isolate in hotel room for 14 days,” McLaughlin wrote online. “Numerous PCR tests negative. Athletes on same flight also identified but rules say they don’t isolate.”

The secretary of the Sports Journalists Association has also been forced into self-isolation in his Tokyo hotel room, the SJA announced.

Liam Morgan, of insidethegames, wrote: “This sets a concerning precedent for those of us here to cover the Games, so it is little surprise the Main Press Centre is hardly a happy place right now.

“We are already subjected to various restrictions as it is. This is excessive and, quite frankly, unacceptable.”
