GROUPS of people took to Edinburgh’s Portobello beach yesterday, with lockdown measures set to begin to ease in Scotland bthis week.

Scots headed to parks and beaches to make the most of the warm weather during yesterday’s Spring Bank Holiday.

Temperatures had been expected to reach 20C in the capital.

Last week, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that under phase one of her four-phase lockdown exit plan, people will be able to sit or sunbathe in parks and open areas – despite yesterday’s visits to outdoor areas, this change isn’t expected to take effect until Thursday.

The first step out of lockdown will also see individuals allowed to meet people from one other household, though initially this will only be allowed in small numbers, in addition to being outside.

Portobello’s beachgoers ran into some trouble last week after Police Scotland were alerted to a large number of groups gathering in the area on another warm day.

Officers did not hand out any fines to those on the beach last Wednesday, but did issue warnings and encouraged compliance with the rules as gathering on the promenade breached the “stay at home” guidance from the Scottish Government.
