New Town (BBC Scotland, 8pm)
SOME 250 years ago, Edinburgh launched a competition to design a “New Town” for the Scottish capital. The city desperately needed an upgrade – it was overcrowded, filthy and crumbling. The winning plan by James Craig was a masterpiece of Georgian city planning that reflected Enlightenment ideas.
This film tells the story of how the plan was made real – becoming one of the most ambitious building projects in Europe.
Rick Stein’s Secret France (BBC2, 9pm)
RICK’S tour brings him to Perigord, which is famous for its black truffles and walnuts, as well as duck dishes. He pays a visit to his favourite market in the city of Perigueux, and traces the historic connections between England and the city, which was once known as the Kingdom of Aquitaine. Inspired by his visit, he returns to the kitchen to prepare Enchaud, a traditional pot roast pork from the region, before heading towards the shores of the Mediterranean and the Cote Catalan near the Spanish border.
Gold Digger (BBC1, 9pm)
MARSHA is reunited with Julia on the anniversary of her husband’s death, and tries to rebuild their former friendship – but Benjamin shatters any hope of reconciliation, and she is left wondering if her relationship with Ted was worth the price she paid – or if her partner can stand the thought of his ex-wife moving on. Patrick and Della pay their mother a visit, and present her with evidence of Benjamin’s indiscretions. She keeps what she knows from him, while plotting to uncover his true motives.
Tutankhamun with Dan Snow (C5, 9pm)
THE historian explores the story of the Egyptian pharaoh’s life and death, and the discovery of his tomb, assisted by journalist John Sergeant and archaeologist Raksha Dave. Snow visits the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to examine the mummies of the boy king’s parents – who were brother and sister, an incestuous relationship that may have had a serious impact on
their son’s health. Dave visits a
new excavation in the Valley of
the Kings.
