IRELAND'S prime minister showed some serious restraint during his meeting with US leader Donald Trump today.

Leo Varadkar gave the perfect blunt response as Trump attempted to compare the "border situations" facing Ireland and the United States.

The pair were asked what they would be discussing during the US president's visit to Ireland.

Trump replied: “Probably you’ll ask me about Brexit," adding that he’d just left the UK.

He continued: “I think that’ll all work out, that will all work out very well. And also for you, with your wall, your border, I mean we have a border situation in the United States and you have one over here. But I hear it’s gonna work out very well, I think it’s both going to work out well, it’s gonna work out very well here."

The cringe is real.

After a brief pause, Varadkar replied: “The thing we want to avoid, of course, is a border or wall.”

Trump was mocked online for the comments, which journalist Richard Chambers said would be "greeted with facepalms across Ireland".

After the press conference with Varadkar, Trump will head to Doonbeg in County Clare to stay at his golf resort.
