Britain’s Liam Broady is one victory away from a first main-draw appearance at the French Open.
The 26-year-old, ranked 206th, defeated Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp 7-6 (5) 7-6 (8) to move through to the third round of qualifying, where he will take on 12th seed Marc Polmans.
Broady saved a set point at 5-6 in the opening set before taking it on a tie-break, and a topsy-turvy second set saw him lead 3-0 before losing five games in a row.
But he broke back when Van De Zandschulp served for the set and then saved three set points in the tie-break before taking his first match point.
Broady’s victory guarantees him prize money of 25,600 euros (approximately £23,000), with tournament organisers prioritising increasing the fund for lower-ranked players in a year offering so little earning potential.
There was disappointment, though, for Samantha Murray Sharan, who lost 6-3 7-6 (1) to Australia’s Arina Rodionova.
