FORMER St Mirren and Ross County midfielder Graham Carey is set to return to Scotland with St Johnstone.

The 33-year-old has been plying his trade in Bulgaria for the past three seasons with CSKA Sofia, but is out of contract at the end of this month.

Carey, who started his career with Celtic, is now expected to switch to Callum Davidson’s Saints ahead of the Perth outfit getting their season underway next month.

The attacking midfielder has spent time with St Mirren and Ross County during his career, while also spending stints in England with Huddersfield and Plymouth.

Carey’s preferred position is in a number 10 role and he could provide Saints with a much-needed spark from midfield that they have missed since David Wotherspoon picked up a cruciate injury in November last year.

Davidson has already added Drey Wright and Andrew Considine to his McDiarmid Park ranks this window.

The Saints boss will look to add further with key first-team stars Shaun Rooney, Jamie McCart, Callum Hendry and Zander Clark all departing this summer.

“It’s very important we get our recruitment right this summer,” said Davidson two weeks ago.

“We are looking for quality to bring in to make sure we have a better season next year.

“Bringing in that quality – players who are ready to go straight into the team – is what we’re looking for.

“Those few weeks after the season ends are always the same.

“It’s a frustrating time for a manager because you want to get cracking and get everyone signed up.

“But players have had a long, hard season and are off on holiday with their families and thinking about their options, so it’s difficult to get answers.”
