ALBION ROVERS have banned a group of their own supporters after allegations of racial abuse towards an opposition player.

The club have banned the 'Coatbridge Boys' group from attending future matches pending the outcome of an investigation.

Kelty Hearts striker Nathan Austin claimed he was targeted with racist abuse by a home supporter after netting a perfect hat-trick in Saturday's match.

Both clubs released statements confirming an investigation into the alleged incident was underway.

An Albion Rovers statement read: "Following Saturday’s very serious allegations of racial abuse, the club have decided to ban the ‘Coatbridge Boys’ from the Reigart Stadium pending the outcome of formal investigations.

"Albion Rovers Football Club abhors racism and discriminatory behaviour both on and off the field.

"The Board of Directors will make no further comment at this time."

An earlier Kelty Hearts statement read: "We are aware of an incident of racist abuse during our match against Albion Rovers FC today.

"It came from an individual in the home end terracing towards one of our players. An investigation is underway with our friends from Albion Rovers FC, who gave all at our club a fantastic welcome on our first visit to Cliftonhill. 

"Kelty Hearts Football Club shall support all of our players and members fully against racism of any kind, we strongly condemn racism and are totally committed to the elimination of all forms of discrimination."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We have been made aware of a social media post concerning an alleged hate crime at a football match in Coatbridge.

"At this time, officers have received no official report or complaint, but we will be engaging with the two clubs involved in the incident."
