LAST week’s 15-12 win over Leinster was my last game for Glasgow, and it was definitely a high note to leave on. At the time we still had a chance of getting to the Rainbow Cup final in Treviso, but we knew that whatever happened that match was going to be the last one at Scotstoun for myself and a lot of the boys, and we spoke before the game about wanting to make it a special one. It was probably one of the sweetest victories I’ve had in a Warriors shirt, to be honest.

I wouldn’t say there’s bad blood there, but Leinster are a top team and we’ve had some really tough games against them in the past. I wanted to beat them so badly, in all honesty. I remember thinking exactly that when Kyle Steyn scored to make it 12-12: “I want to win this game so badly”.

I just really wanted that victory, especially because the last time we played them I felt responsible for the loss after being sent off. I have kind of felt guilty this year. Obviously when I was injured I couldn’t play, but there was a slight kind of guilt that I was leaving and I wasn’t really contributing this season. I only played a handful of games - first I was unable to play through injury, and then I was suspended after that sending-off in Dublin. I just felt that I owed it to the boys to play well in my last few games before leaving to join Gloucester.

As it was my last home match, of course I was fired up for it. That probably over-spilled sometimes, and I could have kept my cool a little bit more, but it was good fun nonetheless.

That win took us to the top of the table, and meant we would stay there and reach the final if Munster and Benetton both lost their remaining games. Since then, of course, Benetton’s match against Ospreys has been cancelled, and the four points they have been awarded means they will definitely make the final whatever happens in Munster’s game against Zebre tonight.

It’s unfortunate that the Ospreys had to call off because of positive Covid cases, but it’s not the first time that has happened this season. The most important thing for us now, as we look back on the Rainbow Cup, is how well we recovered from the defeat by Benetton in our first match.

I didn’t play in that game in Treviso, but after it I think we all as a squad just drew a line in the sand and said ‘Enough’s enough’. We’ve just really been there mentally in the past four games, all of which we’ve won. Sometimes you need a game like that to get things going, and it certainly helped us.

Now that we can’t get to the final, my next game will be on tour with Scotland, hopefully. I’m excited by it. I feel like I’ve got my mojo back a little bit personally, I’m feeling confident again, and I’m looking forward as ever to pulling on a Scotland shirt again.

I love playing for Scotland and I think this tour will be really good fun. England A, Romania and then Georgia - they could all be tough games.

On paper you might think we’re the strong favourites for both of the Tests, but I think Georgia in particular will be a demanding match. We’ll have to make sure we’re stocked up on sun cream before we go out to Romania and Georgia. I’m not sure what time those games kick off at, but hopefully it’s later in the evening so the heat won’t be too much of a factor.

After playing at full-back for the Warriors in recent months I’ve got my fingers crossed that I’ll get a game at stand-off for Scotland. I’ve missed running the ship there a little bit.

To be fair, I’ve really enjoyed playing at full-back. It’s been a bit of an eye-opener. I feel that I’ve shown I can play well there, which may help me in future.

A lot of the time at 10, your head is in the ruck. You’ve got to be scanning out wide, but a lot of your play is in and around the forwards - in your own little area.

Whereas at full-back you’ve got a sight of the bigger picture. You can see teams tighten up, you can see them spread out . . . It’s nice. You’ve almost got free range to pick off where you want.

But having said that, there are several players in the squad who can play at full-back. Stand-off is still my position, and I want that No 10 jersey to be mine again.
