RONALD Gordon believes finishing third in the Premiership will be a significant accomplishment for Hibernian this season - but he still wants the Easter Road club to split the Old Firm in future.
Jack Ross’s side are six points clear of fourth-placed Aberdeen in the Premiership table with just five league games remaining.
Gordon, the Peru-born businessman who bought the Edinburgh club in 2019, has been pleased with how the 2020/21 campaign has gone.
“I think it’s a great achievement,” he said. “But I don’t think we should ever not have more ambition. As a club, we will always have more ambition.
“But we have to go one step at a time. Finishing third is an accomplishment for sure. It is fantastic. But, again, it is not in the bag. We need to finish the job. But if we do finish third? Major accomplishment.
“Cup performances in the last year and a half, certainly since I have been at the club, have been fantastic so we are very grateful for that and proud of that.
“But if we can finish in the top two? Why not? That is what we want to do. We don’t ever want to not have ambition.”
Meanwhile, Gordon, who invested a seven figure sum in Hibs when he bought out Sir Tom Farmer two years ago, revealed he is optimistic of receiving a substantial insurance pay-out.
“We have a very good insurance policy but getting money out of the insurance companies is a little trickier than you would think,” he said.
“But I think we have a very good claim. So, my feeling is we’re going to be reimbursed for a significant amount of our losses.
“Last year at this time at the AGM we had zero debt and we were sitting with £6m in the bank. That was a great position to get us launched into our strategic plan.
“As of December we were sitting with £2.6m. So we went through a whole bunch of money. We were able to recoup some of that so we have £3.3m or something like that. Our goal is going to be to replenish that as quickly as we possibly can.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
