JAMES FORREST is aiming to fire his way into Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad after scoring on his first Celtic start since September last night.
Forrest got the opener to finally set Celtic on their way to a 3-0 win over League One side Falkirk in the Scottish Cup Third Round, and he was looking back to his scintillating best on the right-hand side of the home attack.
Interim Celtic manager John Kennedy said after the match he would be surprised if Forrest was omitted from Steve Clarke’s squad for the nation’s first major tournament in 23 years, and Forrest admitted that he would be devastated if he was to miss out after an injury-hit season.
“Ask any player and they will tell you they want to be involved this summer,” he said.
“Everyone’s buzzing that we have qualified and I want to be part of it in the summer. I definitely want to go.
“There’s no hiding that. I just want to play as many games as I can between now and the end of the season and hopefully that helps my case.
“The manager has been great. Right from the start he has made me feel part of it.
“Hopefully I have a chance.”
Forrest feels he is slowly getting back to the form that has made him such an integral player for club and country over the past few seasons.
“I’m delighted to have started,” he said.
“I came on in the last couple of games but it feels great to start and to top it off with a goal was great.
“It was good to help out the team and get into the next round.
“Since the turn of the year I’ve been training hard and I’ve felt my fitness levels get back up.
“That’s definitely helped me.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
