IT’S great news that Glasgow City has made it through to the last 32 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the 10th consecutive season. Again, it was a penalty shoot-out victory, this time against a strong Icelandic side.

This is an amazing achievement for a club that fought their way to the top and stayed true to themselves. I am sure over the years they have had plenty of offers to join a men’s team, but the vision from founders Carol Anne Stewart and Laura Montgomery stayed strong, and although it has taken a herculean effort to stay afloat, they have succeeded.

If you are still looking for more football, don’t despair, as the women’s national team are due to play a couple of games, away to Portugal on Friday and at home to Finland on December 1.

Both matches are qualifiers for UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 and will be shown live on BBC Alba. Shelley Kerr, who steered the team to a World Cup final just last year, has named her squad and it is great to see Jen Beattie, Chloe Arthur, Fiona Brown and Kim Little returning.

So fingers crossed and hopefully they can bring a smile to the faces of the nation, just like the men’s team, with a couple of wins and qualification for Euro 2022 in England.

I saw a great advert recently which featured Scottish golfer Carly Booth, a three-time Ladies European Tour winner. It was more than just a little tongue in cheek as she was challenged by a confident, if not slightly arrogant young man to a round of golf. Needless to say he was a little taken aback as Carly wiped the floor with him, and all with a smile.

In some people’s eyes, your gender decides what you can and can’t achieve – nothing to do with hard work and application, more to do with your chromosomes! However, each day brings changes and progress towards gender equity in all walks of life.
