RANGERS manager Steven Gerrard last night described the decision to delay supporters being allowed back in to stadiums for at least another three weeks as “a massive blow” for the Ibrox club.

And Gerrard admitted that he will accept whatever implications that setback has on the Premiership leaders buying or selling players before the transfer window closes next month.

The former Liverpool midfielder reacted to the news that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has introduced a series of new restrictions due to a spike in positive coronavirus test results.

“It’s a massive blow,” he said. “It’s not the news that anyone who loves the game or who is connected to our club wanted to hear.

“Football is not the same at the moment. I don’t think anyone enjoys it as much as when we have fans in the stadium, especially when you’re on the eve of situations like we’re in at the moment.

“Coming away to places in Europe should be about playing in front of really exciting atmospheres and really making the game more special than it is. So it’s not the news that anyone wanted. It’s a massive blow for us and the Scottish game.

“Hopefully there’s better news in the coming weeks. They’re reviewing it on October 13 and hopefully there’s better news when we get to that date.”

Gerrard stressed there had been no fresh bids for either Ryan Kent or Alfredo Morelos, who have attracted interest from Leeds United and Lille this summer, ahead of the Europa League game with Willem II in the Netherlands tonight.

Asked what impact having no fans inside Ibrox for the foreseeable future would have on his plans, Gerrard said: “I am very aware of the situation the club is in.

“In terms of me sitting down with the board or Ross (sporting director Wilson) and talking in detail on the situation, I haven’t had that opportunity. The news only broke 24 hours ago.

“But I’m sure it is something that will be on the agenda the next time I sit down with Ross in private.

“Listen, in my situation, the most important thing is the club. Whatever happens and whatever I’m told, I will respect that moving forward.

“But whether that has an effect on the short, medium or long-term is something we’ll have to wait and see.”
