The National:

STEPHEN Flynn has poked fun at Anas Sarwar after the Scottish Labour leader couldn’t help but mention his rival in an award speech.

Sarwar accepted an award at The Herald’s Scottish Politician of the Year awards on Thursday evening.

During his acceptance speech, he referenced how he had won the award twice in the past three years, with his deputy Jackie Baillie winning the gong in the interim.

After this, he joked that people would be thinking when Stephen Flynn “is going to come and rescue us” in what appeared to be a light-hearted dig at the SNP Westminster leader’s bid to run for Holyrood.

He said on stage: “I’m absolutely delighted to win this award. I won it a couple of years ago, Jackie Baillie won it last year, and I’m delighted to win it this year.

“I know what some of you are thinking – ‘can’t wait for that Stephen Flynn to come and rescue us’.”

Flynn was quite happy to laugh it off though, as he tweeted to suggest he was living rent free in Sarwar’s head.

Sharing the clip, he posted the words “rent free” followed by a kiss emoji.

While Flynn has now confirmed he will not be pursuing a dual mandate to remain at Westminster if he becomes an MSP, there is still an understanding he will run for the Scottish Parliament, so maybe we can look forward to more of this banter in the years to come.
