REGARDING the Western Isles seat in the General Election, this was always going to be a difficult one to call (Fergus Ewing urges SNP not to stand candidate against Angus MacNeil, thenational.scot, Nov 29).

Fergus Ewing makes sense considering the strength of support Labour candidate Torcuil Crichton is likely to get from constituents who see him very much as a “local”, but it could appear that the SNP were condoning “mavericks” who disagree with the majority of the party and decide to do what MacNeil has done.

Alternatively, they could pull that old Unionist trick of standing in the constituency, then at the last minute if they see the polling is against them, pull their candidate and recommend support for the independent.
