AS a senior citizen I probably share the concern and unease that the Gender Recognition Reform (GRR) Bill introduces. However, since I consider myself a democrat I can see that what has occurred has been broadly in line with other major countries. Sadly not everyone is so “democratic”, and the parties and people opposing the Scottish Government are trying to use the bill as a political weapon.

An often repeated line in the attack is that the SNP have taken their eye off the ball and spent a disproportionate amount of time looking at gender issues, so it is worth having a look at the work of the Scottish Government during this period.

The SNP introduced the reformed GRR Bill in their manifesto for the 2016 election, which they won. The bill’s consultation period was extended due to the pandemic and was concluded and the bill passed in December 2022.

On checking the other activities of the Scottish Government in the period 2016 to 2022 it is seen that up to 109 other acts were dealt with; this gives the lie, very firmly, to the claim that the SNP gave priority to the GRR Bill at the expense of other legislation.
