IN this week's video column, Lesley Riddoch discusses Boris Johnson's big statements on what he wants the world to achieve at COP26 and how Scotland can step up to make real change.

Lesley does not make much of Johnson's recently saying humanity should "grow up" at the United Nations climate conference and make the big changes needed to save the planet.

"It sounds very much as if he's talking to himself on that," she says as the Tory PM has not been convinced until very recently about the climate change argument.

His spokesperson also recently said that the big aim of COP26 will be to get countries to agree that "coal is dead", an odd statement coming from the government that has not squashed plans for a new coal mine in England.

She says that many companies are operating on the expectation that Johnson will fail to enact any real change on the climate crisis at the conference coming to Glasgow in November and that it will be business as usual.

Lesley says: "We need a government that's brave enough to make the change. It doesn't look like it's going to be Westminster, could it be Holyrood?"

She adds that if Holyrood does want to make a change, it has two "levers" that it can use, one being air quality with a potential cap on the amount of harmful gases allowed to be emitted by buildings. The other lever could be a Scottish national energy company.
