The new Largs community cinema is set to return in the summer - and there are plans afoot for a special Viking-inspired film later in the year too.

Largs Community Council, which is behind the venture, say they are looking to stick to family-friendly movies at their new community cinema after more than 100 people attended their recent showing of Wonka.

That follows on from a similar success story at their opening night, a screening of Barbie in January, which saw plenty of local film fans dress up in Barbie-inspired outfits.

Chairman Jim Phillips said: “We managed to sell 107 tickets for the Wonka showing which was absolutely fantastic.

“We are now planning for the third film, but It has to be family orientated, and all the community councillors are getting their thinking caps on to select a third movie.”

Wendy Low Thomson added: “It was a fantastic movie and a great success.”

The community council is planning to set up an information board in the town centre to provide details of future screenings as part of increased promotion for the initiative.

Community councillor Jamie Black added: “We are going to try and show a film during the Viking Festival to try and broaden what we do, after chatting to festival chairman Douglas Blair.

"I don’t know if we can get The Vikings, starring Kirk Douglas, but we can have a look. Another alternative is a kids' movie like How To Train Your Dragon, which would be a great one.”

The Vikings is a 1958 American epic, directed by Richard Fleischer.

Kirk Douglas, who starred alongside Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine and Janet Leigh in the film, was also its co-producer, alongside Jerry Bresler.
