A MAN has been arrested after a car crashed into the gate at the end of Downing Street. 

Police locked down Whitehall, which runs perpendicular to the Prime Minister's street, after the incident. 

The man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving, police said.

There were no reports of injuries, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police on Twitter. 

The force said: "At around 4.20pm a car collided with the gates of Downing Street on Whitehall. Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.

"There are no reports of any injuries. Enquiries are ongoing."

George Grylls, The Times' defence and political correspondent, said armoured cars were spotted leaving the back end of the street shortly after the incident. 

He tweeted: "Armoured cars seen leaving back of Number 10 moments ago after car crashes into Downing Street gate."
