The National:

THE “robotic” delivery of Rishi Sunak’s first major speech as Conservative leader has led to concerns over more Liz Truss-style public appearances.

After becoming the next UK prime minister – when he was the only candidate remaining with enough MP nominations – Sunak gave a statement to the media for less than two minutes.

The newly coronated leader instead delivered a “glitchy” speech with little excitement for his new role …

“I will work day in day out to deliver for the British people,” he told the camera before standing perfectly still and staring silently into everyone’s souls for around seven seconds. Then ... he just left the stage.

Viewers said it looked as if the new Conservative chief had “glitched” at the end of the presentation, while others branded the footage “extraordinarily awkward”.

How is this possible? We’d all been told what a smooth operator Sunak is …

“I'm convinced the Tories are just an army of robots being used in some evil experiment against us all,” suggested one Twitter user.

“The Robot Wars robots are getting more lifelike each season,” added @jayjayplunkett.

MPs got involved with the criticism of his cringe-inducing delivery, too. Labour’s Toby Perkins asked: “Is this a Liz Truss impression?”

And Darren Jones added: “He doesn't look very excited about becoming PM.”

What do you think is going through Sunak’s mind as he stands staring into the distance during those seven seconds?
