SCOTTISH Hollywood star Karen Gillan has been named as 2022’s Grand Marshal for New York’s Tartan Day Parade.

The Avengers and Doctor Who actress will lead the popular Scottish-themed parade held in Manhattan on April 9.

Now in its 24th year, the event marks the first time the parade will be held in person since 2019.

Gillan will front the event where she will be followed by a procession pipe and drum bands, Highland dancers, Shetlander Vikings, Scottish family clans, among others.

The annual celebration of Scottish heritage and culture brings together a rich tapestry of participants along with many thousands of spectators.

Gillan joins a long list of famous Scots to front the parade, including Billy Connolly, Brian Cox, Sean Connery, Alan Cumming, KT Tunstall and Sam Heughan.

The Inverness actress said she was “absolutely delighted” to represent Scotland during the annual festival.

Gillan said: “I’m honoured to help celebrate Scotland in America, and I look forward to playing a part in broadening the public’s awareness of Scotland’s history and cultural contributions."

Gillan rose to fame for playing the Doctor’s assistant Amy Pond before embarking on a successful Hollywood career including Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji.
