ALBA will tomorrow hold a National campaign Day of Action for Independence as they step up their efforts to put urgency on the constitutional question.

Alex Salmond’s party have urged their members to take to streets across the country to make the case for independence as an immediate priority.

The Day of Action comes as the COP26 climate change summit reaches its conclusion. The eyes of the world have been on Scotland for the past fortnight and Alba believe that now is the time to progress the case with urgency.

They say that without independence major decisions on Covid economic recovery, the replacement of nuclear weapons, and the climate emergency will be imposed on Scotland by the UK Government.

Alba want the Scottish Government to take immediate action on the constitutional issue and not delay until 2023 at the earliest, as set out in the SNP/Green co-operation agreement.

Alba chair Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh said: “Boris Johnson’s job as Prime Minister is under the greatest threat since he swept to office and Westminster is in political chaos. The time to progress the cause of Scotland’s independence could not be better.

“Without the full powers of independence, Scotland is set to miss out on the economic benefits of achieving Net Zero, and we will have major decisions imposed upon us by Westminster, whether that be the renewal of Nuclear Weapons on the Clyde or the economic policies of Covid recovery.

“Boris Johnson heralded the COP summit in Glasgow by sabotaging Scotland’s carbon capture potential – disastrous for the planet and bad for Scotland and the price paid for continuing Westminster rule.

“To that end I am delighted that tomorrow (Saturday) will be our first ALBA National Day of Action for Independence.

“So we are calling on all our activists, while the eyes of the world are still on Scotland, to make the Alba case for Scotland’s independence as an immediate priority.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold a referendum by the end of 2023 so long as the pandemic has passed.
