CYCLIST Josh Quigley is set to be recognised in parliament after setting a new world record with a ride between Aberdeen and the Cairngorms.

In September the rider, from Livingston, broke the world record for greatest distance cycled in a week – taking the title from Australian pro Jack Thompson by racking up 2179.66 miles in seven days.

That was two miles more than the record. In order to meet his target, the cyclist did 80-mile laps in the north east, tried to keep a speed of 18mph for 18 hours a day and did not stop for toilet breaks.

Quigley described the experience as the “most intense” of his life – with Guinness World Records later confirming he was the new title holder.

Now SNP MP Hannah Bardell, who represents Livingston at Westminster, has submitted a motion to celebrate Quigley’s “amazing” achievement.

The motion mentions that Quigley had enjoyed the success after being diagnosed with Arthritis earlier this year, and goes on to wish him “every success for the future”.

So far the motion has received five signatures – from DUP MP Jim Shannon plus SNP MPs Bardell, Marion Fellows, Chris Law and Allan Dorans.
