RUSSIAN president Vladimir Putin will not be attending the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow next month, the Kremlin has confirmed.

Earlier this week it was reported that Putin could miss the major UN conference, citing the “pandemic situation”.

It comes after Chinese president Xi Jinping decided to snub the talks.

Despite Putin dropping out of the event, the Kremlin has insisted it takes cutting emissions seriously and will be sending a delegation of 200 people to Glasgow.

The UK Government is hoping it can secure a serious climate deal between world leaders when they are in Scotland’s biggest city next month – but Putin and Jinping’s absence is likely to be seen as a blow to those hopes.

COP26 takes place in Glasgow between October 31 and November 12.
