The National:

WE know Douglas Ross must be a busy soul, no doubt getting texts and emails from his wide variety of jobs – refereeing, Westminster lackey for Boris Johnson, Scottish Tory branch office leader...

But there's a time and a place to be checking your emails. First Minister's Questions should not be that time, though Ross has never seemed too concerned about coming across as a statesman.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had to reprimand Douglas, telling him to "get off his phone" during a question about the incoming cut to Universal Credit and its horrific impact.

Sturgeon spotted Ross's apparent lack of interest earlier when SNP MSP Evelyn Tweed asked the First Minister in urging the Tories to reverse the cuts.

In the video below, you can see what happened a little later as she told him off.

We've often said the Scottish Tory leader needs to go back to school – but more to get a basic grasp of mathematics, not flashbacks to being told to put your phone away.

The First Minister has called the £20-a-week slash to the benefit "indefensible".

During her answer, Sturgeon said: "Taking at this time in particularly £20 a week away from the most vulnerable, lowest-income households across the country simply cannot be defended in any way shape or form.

"And I do say to the Conservatives here, if Douglas Ross wants to get off his phone for a moment as we're talking about this very serious issue.

"I would say to the Conservatives in this chamber please over the next few days try to persuade your UK colleagues not to do this."
