A PICTURE has re-emerged showing National reader and Euro 2020-winning Italy coach Roberto Mancini donning a Scotland shirt in 1990.
The leader of the Azzurri became a hero for many Scots when he saved us from 55 more years of England banging on about the competition by defeating them on penalties in the final.
The National had mocked Mancini up as William Wallace from Braveheart alongside the headline “FINAL HOPE” going into the last game.
He was clearly a fan – praising our work in his press conference. Team captain Giorgio Chiellini did too.
Roberto the Bruce was even photographed on the flight home with a copy of The National resting next to him under the Euro 2020 trophy itself.
Now, more evidence has emerged of the link he has with Scotland.
Many eyes have been on Carlo Ancelotti in a throwback image to the Italy team of Italia 90 (and a couple of helpers) wearing the kits of the different participating teams.

Despite there being one in 24 odds of this happening, guess which player was donned the Scotland shirt?
Exactly. As was brought to our attention on Twitter, Mancini himself is the one donning Scotland’s top.
You can spot him in the middle row.

We think he looks fantastic in it … but it's about time he got an updated version, in our view.
And if Steve Clarke ever needs a replacement…
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
