THE OGTC is set to invest up to £1 million in game-changing technologies to accelerate the production, storage and use of hydrogen, as well as its transportation.

It has extended its call for ideas after recent initiatives in the Scottish Government’s hydrogen policy statement and the £10 billion funding for the North Sea transition deal. Submissions will have to focus on technologies which will decarbonise offshore operations and help the UK become the world’s first net-zero basin.

Innovative ideas must be at technology readiness level (TRL) stage (1-4), require academic research to accelerate development and be focused on at least one of four areas.

These include optimising the production of blue hydrogen; bulk hydrogen transportation; long-term storage; and carrier utilisation – including power generation for offshore platforms and as a marine sector transportation fuel.

OGTC’s chief technologist, Dr Vinay Mulgundmath, said: “Our Integrated Energy Vision report, published last year, outlined how a 10-fold increase in hydrogen production is needed by 2050 to create new jobs and achieve maximum economic benefit for the UK.

“New solutions to unlock the potential of blue and green hydrogen are a top priority for OGTC, and we have the network in place to offer developers best-in-class technology support, academic expertise and funding.”
