SUPPORTERS of Maryhill FC will tour the West of Scotland’s junior team stadiums in a bid to raise funds for their club.

Campbell Finlayson organised the sponsored walk with friends to fund a new and improved catering facility at the North Glasgow club.

The 21-year-old, from Summerston, has supported his local side since he started going to games with his uncle in 2005.

“You feel more a part of something,” said Campbell.

“Because so many of us volunteer with the club, you’re always mucking in with something.”

He and five fellow fans, Rory Hardcastle, James Greig, Chris Burns and Calum Maclean are walking a 30-mile round trip, taking in some of the region’s smaller stadiums, including those of Drumchapel United, Clydebank & Yoker Athletic, St Roch’s, Petershill, Ashfield, Glasgow Perthshire and ending at Lochburn Park, the home of Maryhill FC.

The club, founded in 1884, has faced several setbacks in recent years.

We reported last month how club bosses were forced to set up barbed wire along the grounds after callous vandals spray-painted its walls in three separate break-ins over a period of five days.

The fans’ trek will raise cash to pay for the creation of an outdoor food and drink space, with a beer garden attached and a place for fans to grab a bite to eat at games.

It will be open for use to supporters who buy a hospitality package with the club and for visiting clubs before matches.

So far, generous donors have pledged more than £700 for the walk, which is set to take place either on May 22 or May 29, depending on when the group are all available.

Asked why people should support the effort, Campbell said: “It’s a community thing.

“Maryhill has always been a fairly big junior team and we’ve fallen by the wayside a little.

“People who put work in here aren’t getting paid, they’re doing something to help their local community and it’s a club that is open to anybody.”
