SOME time ago, a journalist friend mentioned that when his paper was short of letters to the editor, his editor requested him to start writing letters. The letter from a monarchist in yesterday’s paper recalled my friend’s comments. Anyway, I have come out of my bunker with my chip on my shoulder to submit this letter.

Several years ago Channel 4 arranged a phone-in poll regarding the future of the monarchy. Scotland was the one part that showed a majority for its abolition.

The argument that the alternative would be some Hitler, Stalin or other weirdo is fallacious of course, as the public would be able to choose and in any case the winner would be in post for a fixed term.

Meanwhile I will now return to my bunker with a dressing on my chipped shoulder.
