The National:

DAILY Mail columnist Sarah Vine was last night keen to signal her support for the Cabinet Office moving 500 staff to Glasgow by 2024 – but ended up red-faced.

The department is led by her husband, Michael Gove, who will be visiting Scotland next week following the announcement of the move. According to reports Glasgow was chosen over York in an effort to combat support for independence.

Glasgow backed independence by 53.5% at the 2014 referendum and is represented by seven SNP MPs. More recent polling indicating support for leaving the Union is now even higher in the city.

The news of the Cabinet Office move sparked a lot of conversation last night, but Vine was keen to discuss the positives. She decided to name-drop one of her favourite spots in the city.

“I like Glasgow,” she tweeted. “Used to go there quite a lot when I was a youngster.

“Ubiquitous fish, west end etc. They’ll love it.”

It’s generally assumed that Vine was actually trying to celebrate the famous city restaurant Ubiquitous Chip, located on Ashton Lane, which has been a top dining spot in Glasgow since 1971.

Other commenters noticed that Vine only managed to celebrate a very specific part of the city, with Ubiquitous Chip being in the West End itself.

Vine’s error prompted quite a bit of response from residents. “Ubiquitous Fish. I wonder if Vine is one of those folk who thinks Glasgow rhymes with Moscow?” one person replied.

“Who doesn't like visiting the bars in Headhill''s Ashton Close, then walking through Clydegrove park to Tulip Street,” James Doleman joked.

“This is just glorious. Hope you enjoyed yer ubiquitous fish. Did you stay on Great Eastern Road?” Sheena Macdonald asked.

“Maybe she's not talking about the Chip, and just encountered fish everywhere she went in Glasgow,” one person suggested.

Fergus Mutch commented: “Ubiquitous fish, Cafe Gandalf, Two thin ladies, Cail brouhaha, Shabcrack, The 87, Father India … Miss all my Glasgow faves.”

We’re sure the Cabinet Office is excited to come up and explore lots of other Glasgow locations, like the Barrel Lands, Mary’s Hill and the Finny’s Town Crane.
