The Cure: Live in Hyde Park (Sky Arts, 9pm)
IN July 2018, English rock band The Cure celebrated the 40-year anniversary of their first ever gig with a live concert at London’s Hyde Park. “This really was the perfect way to celebrate 40 years of the band,” said singer Robert Smith. “It was a fabulous day that none of us will ever forget.” This scrapbook-style documentary, shot in 4K by long-time collaborator Tim Pope and mixed at Abbey Road Studios by Smith and Paul Corkett, goes behind the scenes of the event and features footage from the legacy defining concert as well as profiling the band.
The Wall Versus Celebrities (BBC1, 6.40pm)
FORMER England and Liverpool winger (and short-lived Celtic manager) John Barnes teams up with Sky Sports pundit and Ninja Warrior host Chris Kamara as they attempt to defeat the formidable Wall and win a decent amount of cash for charity. In order to triumph in this game of risk and reward, they will need the green and red balls to fall in their favour, but one mistake could see them losing everything. As usual, host Danny Dyer is on hand with his supportive but bizarre interjections, ramping up the tension and telling the duo if they are wrong or if they are right.
Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (STV, 7pm)
FINGERS crossed, the latest lockdowns will soon be over. However, that is unlikely to mean a return to normality just yet, and we will still need to find a way to keep entertained on these cold, dark Saturday nights, especially with the second series of The Masked Singer ending last week. Tonight, everyone’s favourite TV presenting duo are finally back on the box with “the happiest 90 minutes of the week”. The first edition sees father-and-son duo Harry and Jamie Redknapp take part in I’m A Celebrity Get Out Of Me Ear, while Stephen Mulhern returns for an epic Ant v Dec. Plus, Fleur East gives one viewer the surprise of their lives and Gary Barlow takes part in the End of The Show Show.
The Jonathan Ross Show: Special Guests (STV, 10.40pm)
THIS compilation show looks back at some of the most memorable moments from recent series of the award-winning talk show. Among the highlights are Jonathan’s 2014 interview with the then London Mayor Boris Johnson, who appears to be more concerned with bantering with fellow guest James Corden and throwing in a history lesson, than pushing his campaign to become Prime Minister. There are also clips from the host’s chat with the queen of US chat shows Oprah Winfrey, as well as guests including Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, Dame Joan Collins, Michael McIntyre and Big Narstie.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
