OUTLANDER star Sam Heughan has dropped a heavy hint that he may be the next James Bond.

The leading man got fans talking after posting onto the Instagram page of his upcoming Men In Kilts TV show.

Heughan posted a short video of himself in full Scottish attire, with brief explanations of the outfit’s elements. This included his sporran, kilt, Prince Charlie jacket, and bowtie.

Alongside the social media post the actor, best known for playing Jamie Fraser in the Starz historical drama Outlander, wrote: “The name is Heughan. Sam Heughan.”

The brief caption has been taken by some fans as confirmation that Heughan will take over as James Bond when Daniel Craig steps down.

Comments on the post included from fans who wrote: "Bond in Kilt! YES!", "Such a great James Bond look", and "Bond. Sam Bond. Agent in kilt."

No Time To Die will be the 25th in the Bond series and Craig's fifth and final outing. The movie has been delayed for nearly two years.

Originally scheduled for release on November 8, 2019, the departure of original director Danny Boyle, and later the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, mean it is now due to hit cinemas in October this year.

There has been much speculation around who will take on the role after Craig leaves, with names such as Idris Elba and Tom Hardy often being heard.

However, in a Radio Times poll from last summer, Heughan emerged the clear people’s favourite.

The Outlander star took 30% of the total vote, more than twice his nearest competitor, Hardy, on just 14%. Elba came fourth on 10%, behind Superman actor Henry Cavill on 11%.

Heughan has previously said Bond would be a “dream” role, and revealed he had auditioned to play 007 in Casino Royale, when Craig won the part.

Speaking in June 2020, Heughan said: “Obviously it’s a dream for every actor. I auditioned for it back when they were doing Bond 21 when Daniel Craig was cast in Casino Royale and I think a lot of actors were seen in the UK.

“Of course it would be a dream role and a Scottish Bond, who doesn’t want to see another Scottish Bond!”

Men In Kilts will see Heughan and fellow Scots actor Graham McTavish explore their homeland, delving into its culture and history.

The series will air from February 14 this year.
